Discovery Tool

Discover GALILEO is a way to search content from GALILEO's 300+ databases and collections. With a single search, Discover GALILEO combines the ease and speed of popular internet search engines with the quality and organization of content that only a library can provide. Unlike the popular search engines that provide information inadequate for educational and research purposes, Discover GALILEO allows users to search across a wealth of quality content simultaneously.  Discover GALILEO offers many research tools, including a personal research folder that allows users to save, cite, retrieve, and link to content.

D2L + GALILEO

Did you know you can search GALILEO from your Brightspace account? Just login to D2L and the GALILEO icon will be at the top of the page, along with a Discovery Tool search box on the left-hand side!

When you search GALILEO through D2L, you do not need to look up the GALILEO password.

Personal Librarians

This is a reminder that each of our librarians are assigned to specific subject areas to assist students and faculty members with all of their library needs. Our personal librarians offer library instruction and collection development; and are always willing to help faculty with assignment structure and identifying the best resources for students.

Your Personal Librarians:
Beverly Eskridge - Education
Beth Pye - Humanities, Nursing & Health Sciences
Brenda Rutherford - Biology & Physical Science, History & Political Science
Jim Rickerson - Fine & Performing Arts, Business & Public Service
Dr. Sonya Gaither - Mathematics & Computer Science

All of our personal librarians ask that faculty members send their course syllabi at the beginning of each semester so we may look over assignments and get familiar with what they consist of so we can better prepare for student needs.

Student Reminders

Renewals & Recalls

The library staff will be happy to assist students with renewing books. There are 3 options for doing so:

1. Students may bring the book, along with their Gordon State College ID, to the library and our staff will check the book out again in the circulation system.

2. Books can be renewed online either on or off campus.

3. The book self-checkout machine.

After a book has been checked out for 28 days, it may be recalled if another student needs it. The student who currently possesses the book must return it so that it may be checked out by the other student.

Reserve Materials

Reserve materials are items that professors have placed at the circulation desk and that have specific checkout times. The professor decides how they will circulate in the library. Circulation periods may be one of the following:

1. Two hour in-library use. These cannot leave the library, but photocopies may be made. Overdue fines apply.

2. 48-hour reserve. These items can leave the library and are due back by closing the next day or when class resumes. On Fridays, items are check out until Monday. Overdue fines apply.

3. Seven day checkout. These items may leave the library and are due back in seven days. Overdue fines apply.

*Note that changes will be made after we go live with the new GILFind

Library Instruction & Personal Librarian Program

Our library's Information Literacy and Instructional Program supports the instructional mission of the Library and the College to create information literate students.

GSC offers a wide variety of learning opportunities. Instruction is available in many ways that can be found at the bottom of the library instruction page.

One of the most effective methods of instruction is through our Personal Librarian Program. By setting up an appointment with the librarian assigned to each specific subject, students will receive one-on-one instruction. The librarian will help students identify the best resources for their research and guide them through the process.

Do not expect the librarians to do the work for you, they are here to guide you. "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

Faculty may check a book out for the entire academic year, however after they have had it for one year and they renew it for the next year, the book may be recalled if someone else needs it.

Reserve Materials

Any materials may be placed on reserve in accordance with fair use and copyright guidelines.

Faculty may use the Course Reserves Request Form to place items on reserve. Click here for more tips for placing items on reserve.

Faculty wanting to place items on reserve are encouraged to provide those materials to the library staff no later than two weeks after the start of each semester. Please allow up to 72 hours for each item to be processed and placed on reserve before they are made available to students.

Note that materials on reserve are returned to the circulating collection or to the appropriate faculty member at the end of each semester. Please notify the Circulation Librarian if you wish materials to remain on reserve or have questions.

GIL-Find Favorites & Training Dates

Anyone who has saved any searches or title results as Favorites in their current library account will lose that information when we switch to Alma. They will need to print that information then re-create and save Favorites in their new library account using the new catalog, when it becomes available.

Faculty will be able to save and print their Favorites items from their current account until May 25, 2017. When Alma goes live on May 26, 2017, you will be able to (re)create and save Favorites in your new library account.

*More information on how to save and/or re-create Favorites will be forthcoming.

D2L Reading Lists

Creating D2L Reading List using GALILEO and other library electronic resources:
http://faculty.gordonstate.edu/autumns/videos/d2lreadinglist/d2lreadinglist.html

This highly detailed video will go step-by-step on how to assign the correct lists to the correct courses, how to customize the lists, and prevent accidental duplication. The video will also provide steps on how to add/remove articles and links to new or existing reading lists. If a PDF full text is available, the student can see it right within D2L. If it is a book, the GIL information will be provided so that the student can locate it in the physical library. Faculty members can also see which students have opened the specific links on the reading list.

Instructional Videos

Creating D2L Reading List using GALILEO and other library electronic resources:
http://faculty.gordonstate.edu/autumns/videos/d2lreadinglist/d2lreadinglist.html  (Faculty Use)

This video takes you through the process of creating D2L reading lists and using GALILEO and other library electronic resources. This highly detailed video will teach you how to make sure you assign the correct lists to the correct courses, and how to customize the lists and prevent accidental duplication. The more specific the reading list name is, the better. This will show you how to add/remove articles and links to new or existing reading lists. Here, you can also add notes and instructions to your articles along with other web resources that are not available through GALILEO or other library resources. Once this information is added, all students have to do is click on the names of the books, articles or videos. If a PDF full text is available, the student can see it right within D2L. If it is a book, the GIL information will be provided so that the student can locate it in the physical library. Depending on the browser, it may appear that the link is not working. This video explains how to make the link work by disabling protection, allowing the webpage to be displayed. Faculty members can also see which students have opened the specific links on the reading list.

Scheduling Personal Librarian Appointments:
www.gordonstate.edu/faculty/autumns/videos/personallibrarian/personallibrarian.html (Student Use)

This is an overview of how to schedule a consultation appointment to meet with one of our librarians. A list of the librarians' contact information and specialties is provided. Students will want to try and schedule an appointment based on the designated specialty of the librarian. However, if that librarian is unavailable, students may schedule their appointment with another librarian. When filling out student information for the appointment, students will be asked their objective as well as the assignment in which they are seeking assistance, along with the professor's name. This will help the librarian prepare for the appointment and give better instruction. After confirming the appointment, students will receive an email with the date, time, and location of the appointment as well as the librarian's contact information. If needed, students may cancel the appointment and go through the process again to reschedule. Attached to the email is an Outlook calendar reminder. Opening this attachment will allow students to add the appointment to their Outlook calendar.

Making Study Room Reservations:
www.gordonstate.edu/faculty/autumns/videos/studyrooms/studyrooms.html  (Student Use)

This is an overview of how to reserve individual and group study rooms within the library. Students are required to reserve the room prior to entering it. Individual study rooms will only accommodate one person. Group study rooms will accommodate two to six students at a time. Only one person within the group will need to complete the reservation process. If the student needs to reserve on-the-go, he/she may scan the QR code on the outside of the room and then complete the form via mobile device. The study rooms may be reserved for two consecutive hours at a time. It is important that the student make note of the room number when choosing the date and time of the reservation. Clicking on "Submit Booking" does NOT mean the student has finished the reservation process. The student will then receive an email from LibCal, where they will be asked to confirm the reservation within 15 minutes. If need be, the student may cancel the reservation via the same email. To confirm the reservation, click on the link provided in the email, then choose "yes". After choosing "yes", the reservation is complete. Another email will be sent to the student as a confirmation, with a link to add the reservation to their calendar. The video will go in detail on how to find the rooms.
