April
is School Library Month, when all types of libraries
(school, public, academic, & special) come together to celebrate the
contributions of libraries and librarians, and promote use and support. April
9-15, 2017 is National
Library Week;
an observance first sponsored in 1958 by the American Library Association (ALA)
and libraries across the nation.
"Libraries
Transform" is the theme for 2017's National Library Week, with Olympic
gold medalist and World Cup champion Julie Foudy lending support as Honorary
Chair.
National
Library Week events include:
- Monday, April 10: The 2017 State of America's Libraries report is released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2016.
- Tuesday, April 11: National Library Workers Day, for all library staff, users, and friend groups to recognize the contributions made by all library workers. To show your support on social media, use #NLWD17
- Wednesday, April 12: National Bookmobile Day, to recognize our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make bookmobile outreach possible. #NBD2017
- Thursday, April 13: Take Action for Libraries Day. Recently dedicated, 2017 is the first year this will be observed as a national library advocacy effort to safeguard funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
