This week's library champion is Ms. Autumn Schaffer. Ms. Schaffer uses the Dorothy W. Hightower
Collaborative Learning Center & Library for her online research. Schaffer
teaches online classes and encourages her students to use the online resources
available such as GALILEO. Schaffer feels “this is an excellent place to find
quality resources.” Schaffer likes that a student can “filter by year, full
text, peer reviewed, and even search by journals.” Schaffer feels this has
helped her students learn literacy skills. Schaffer uses GALILEO, Films on
Demand and the Reading List feature in D2L for her online classes. Films on
Demand “has been integrated into D2L so that faculty can search and pull in
videos directly there for students to view (which is great for a flipped
classroom model). The Reading List is another great feature on D2L.” The
professors can put articles up there to be accessed directly from GALILEO. Schaffer
mentioned the CREDO Information Literacy Modules that are available from the
library in conjunction with D2L. “These are mini-lessons and assessments that
students can take in regards to information literacy and citations.” Schaffer
uses LibGuides for APA citation which has been “a great help to the students.” Schaffer
uses ProQuest, Academic Search Complete for her research, and she has used
MEDLINE and CINAHL in conjunction with the Nursing Department. Schaffer
encourages faculty to use Films on Demand and The Reading List tool. “I think
the CREDO Information Literacy Modules would be phenomenal for freshman and
beginning-writing courses.” Schaffer loves “all of the online academic
resources and the atmosphere of the library itself. It feels so welcoming and
fresh now.” Schaffer also has heard from students that “the group and
individual study rooms are hugely beneficial for commuters in-between classes
or for residents looking for a place to study in the evenings.”
