Library Champions

This week's library champion is Ms. Tonya Moore. Ms. Moore uses the Dorothy W. Hightower Collaborative Learning Center & Library every couple of weeks online and when meeting with students. Moore uses the library for research and references for students. Moore also holds events in the library. Moore’s favorite database to share with students is the Mergent Intellect database. This database provides many resources for students. Moore appreciates the efforts of Jim Rickerson when he “set up a demonstration on research for students.” Moore recommends “the access to computers, the laptops for training, and the smart boards for instruction.” Moore loves the “accessibility of resources for faculty, staff, and students.” Moore enjoys the friendliness of the library staff, and she is “really excited about the technology. “ The library provides a “very professional space for Career Services when we perform our mock interviews with the students. The downstairs computers help the students update their resumes on the spot.”  

Library Champions

This week’s Library Champion is Mrs. Theresa Betkowski. Mrs. Betkowski uses the Dorothy W. Hightower Collaborative Learning Center & Library about once a week. Betkowski attends meetings in the library and encourages students to use the online resources in the library. Betkowski has taken GFYE classes to the library for library orientation with a librarian. Betkowski uses GALILEO and its many databases for research. “My colleagues should use the library staff to talk to students and stress research on campus.” Betkowski feels librarians can help students with issues of plagiarism. “The librarians can have a talk in classrooms or at the library.”  Betkowski loves the new facility with the meeting rooms and open space. “Students can meet and talk in a more collaborative environment.”

Library Champions

This week’s Library Champion is Dr. Richard Schmude.

Dr. Schmude visits the Dorothy W. Hightower Collaborative Learning Center & Library a minimum of one to two times a week and up to four times a week depending on the time of year. He enjoys pulling books and reading newspapers and magazines the library has available. He also uses the library as a quiet study area. Schmude takes his Chemistry 1152 classes to the library for a discussion on research for their final research paper project. He also takes his Integrated Science class up to the second floor to show them “the unique architecture, the holes in the walls, that helps reduce the sound. That way students can be studying in one spot and talking in another and they will not disturb each other.” Schmude uses the EBSCO database for research. Schmude encourages his colleagues to check out the reference books the library has available along with copies of the Georgia Journal of Science. He recommends using the classroom that is available to faculty for classes at the library. Schmude’s favorite things about the library include the papers, the online availability and the Astronomical Almanac.
